Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal building at Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam, marking a significant milestone in the region’s connectivity, economic growth, and global integration.

Addressing a public gathering, PM Modi emphasized that modern airports and advanced connectivity infrastructure open new opportunities and possibilities for any state, and that Assam and the entire Northeast are emerging as a new gateway to India’s development. He stated that the Northeast will lead India’s future growth.

Highlighting Assam’s progress, the Prime Minister noted that the new terminal will significantly enhance the airport’s capacity, enabling over 12 lakh passengers to travel annually. He added that improved infrastructure will boost tourism and make visits to iconic destinations like Maa Kamakhya Temple more convenient.

Design and Features of the New Terminal

• Size: Spread over 1.4 lakh sq. meters, designed for 1.3 crore passengers annually.

• Theme: India’s first nature-themed airport terminal, based on a “Bamboo Forest” concept, reflecting Assam’s biodiversity and cultural heritage.

• Materials: Around 140 metric tons of bamboo sourced from Northeast India.

• Architecture: Features 57 garden-inspired pillars symbolizing Kaziranga landscapes, rhinoceros, and Kopou flowers; includes a unique “Sky Forest” with over 100,000 native plant species.

• Technology: Full-body scanners, contactless travel, automated baggage handling, AI-powered airport operations, and fast immigration processes for seamless and secure travel.

• Infrastructure: Upgraded runway, airfield system, apron, and taxiway for improved operational efficiency.

• PM Modi praised Assam’s leadership and people for actively participating in India’s development mission, noting historical contributions of leaders like Gopinath Bordoloi.

• He stressed that development projects over the past 11 years have transformed connectivity and economic opportunities in Assam and the Northeast, including bridges, highways, railways, waterways, and smart infrastructure projects.

• The Prime Minister emphasized digital connectivity through 4G and 5G, transforming previously underserved districts into development hubs.

• Highlighted Assam’s role as India’s eastern gateway, connecting to ASEAN countries and boosting tourism, trade, and regional investment.

The inauguration was attended by Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal, K. Ram Mohan Naidu, Murali Dhar Mohol, Pavitra Margerita, and other dignitaries.

PM Modi concluded by congratulating the people of Assam and the nation, stating that the new terminal represents a blend of heritage, innovation, and sustainable infrastructure, and is a milestone in India’s journey toward modern connectivity and economic growth.
