Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal building at Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam, marking a significant milestone in the region’s connectivity, economic growth, and global integration.
Addressing a public gathering, PM Modi emphasized that modern airports and advanced connectivity infrastructure open new opportunities and possibilities for any state, and that Assam and the entire Northeast are emerging as a new gateway to India’s development. He stated that the Northeast will lead India’s future growth.
Highlighting Assam’s progress, the Prime Minister noted that the new terminal will significantly enhance the airport’s capacity, enabling over 12 lakh passengers to travel annually. He added that improved infrastructure will boost tourism and make visits to iconic destinations like Maa Kamakhya Temple more convenient.
Design and Features of the New Terminal

Size: Spread over 1.4 lakh sq. meters, designed for 1.3 crore passengers annually.

Theme: India’s first nature-themed airport terminal, based on a “Bamboo Forest” concept, reflecting Assam’s biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Materials: Around 140 metric tons of bamboo sourced from Northeast India.

Architecture: Features 57 garden-inspired pillars symbolizing Kaziranga landscapes, rhinoceros, and Kopou flowers; includes a unique “Sky Forest” with over 100,000 native plant species.

Technology: Full-body scanners, contactless travel, automated baggage handling, AI-powered airport operations, and fast immigration processes for seamless and secure travel.

Infrastructure: Upgraded runway, airfield system, apron, and taxiway for improved operational efficiency.
