The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a disturbing media report alleging illegal detention and custodial torture of a journalist by the Crime Branch police in Rajkot.
According to reports, the incident occurred on March 22, 2026, when the journalist, who operates an online media outlet, was allegedly detained unlawfully by the police. The victim was reportedly subjected to severe physical abuse, including being stripped and hung upside down, leading to serious injuries.
The media report further claims that police officials attempted to pressure staff at Rajkot Civil Hospital to deny medical treatment to the victim. Additionally, the journalist was allegedly threatened with false criminal charges and demolition of his house.
Taking serious note of the allegations, the NHRC observed that if the claims are found to be true, they represent a grave violation of human rights. The Commission has therefore issued a notice to the Director General of Police (DGP), Gujarat, directing him to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
The report is expected to include the current status of the investigation as well as the health condition of the victim.
As per reports published on March 29, 2026, the injured journalist was admitted to Rajkot Civil Hospital on March 23, where he received medical treatment for injuries allegedly sustained during police custody.
The case has raised serious concerns regarding press freedom and custodial practices, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and protection of journalists in India.
