The National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a tragic industrial accident reported in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district, where a boiler tube explosion at a thermal power plant reportedly killed at least 13 workers and left around 20 others injured.
According to media reports, the incident occurred on 14 April 2026, when an explosion released extremely hot steam, engulfing workers present at the site. The intensity of the blast led to severe injuries and fatalities.
⚖️ NHRC Issues Notice to State Authorities
Taking the matter seriously, the National Human Rights Commission of India has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) of Chhattisgarh.
The Commission has directed them to submit a detailed report within two weeks. The report must include:
- Status of compensation provided to the victims’ families
- Health condition of injured workers
- Details of the incident and response actions
The NHRC observed that if the reported facts are accurate, the case represents a serious violation of human rights.
🚑 Rescue Operation and Medical Treatment
As per reports published on 15 April 2026, the rescue operation began after the boiler was shut down and cooled. Emergency teams and police reached the site and initiated relief work.
The injured workers were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Some victims are said to be in critical condition.
⚠️ Serious Questions on Industrial Safety
This incident has once again raised concerns over industrial safety standards in thermal power plants across India. Experts believe that strict monitoring, regular maintenance, and safety protocols are essential to prevent such tragic accidents.
The Chhattisgarh boiler blast is a devastating reminder of the risks faced by industrial workers. With the NHRC stepping in, attention is now on accountability, compensation, and ensuring such incidents do not occur again.
Authorities are expected to act swiftly and ensure justice and support for the affected families.
