New Delhi | February 20, 2026: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports alleging physical and sexual assault on a woman journalist while she was covering a student protest at **University of Delhi North Campus.
According to reports, the incident occurred on February 13, 2026, when the journalist was covering a protest by students against UGC regulations. It is alleged that members of the crowd physically assaulted and sexually harassed her.
Media reports further claim that the journalist was allegedly targeted after her caste identity became known. She has also alleged that some individuals threatened to parade her naked, after which she reportedly lost consciousness.
NHRC Issues Notice to Delhi Police
Taking serious note of the matter, the NHRC observed that if the contents of the news reports are true, they indicate a grave violation of the victim’s human rights.
The Commission has issued a notice to the Delhi Police Commissioner, seeking a detailed report on the incident within two weeks.
Journalist’s Allegations
As per media reports published on February 14, 2026, the journalist alleged that she was specifically targeted because of her caste. She reportedly managed to escape the situation with assistance from some teachers and women police personnel present at the site.
